A rainy day in Bremerhaven, a piece of wasteland on a prime site within view of the Alfred Wegener Institute for Polar and Marine Research (AWI) and the question of why the weather is how it is: and so the idea for the Klimahaus® Bremerhaven 8° Ost was born, back in the year 2000 in the imagination of Dr. Carlo Petri (Petri & Tiemann GmbH).
The building was designed by Klumpp Architects Urban Planners, with the project planning being taken on by agn Niederberghaus & Partner GmbH. Exhibition design is by Kunstraum GfK mbH, Hamburg under the overall project direction of STÄWOG Städtische Wohnungsgesellschaft Bremerhaven mbH.
In the Klimahaus® there are four exhibition areas in all: The Journey, The Elements, Perspectives, Opportunities. Visitors are taken through nine stations covering the various climatic regions of the Earth. More than 100 interactive displays in the Elements exhibition area illustrate the physics of the climate, its complex interdependencies and numbers of amazing phenomena. The history of the climate, ranging from the origins of the Earth 3.9 thousand million years ago and looking forward to the year 2050 is shown in the Perspectives area. Three zones, nine chambers, one individual, many individuals, all of mankind – keywords and subjects in Opportunities. The Klimahaus® presents unique experiences and substantiated information.
From the outset, the development team at Petri & Tiemann were aware that particularly a project such as the Klimahaus® would require an environmentally friendly use of energy. Experience gathered during construction can be applied to other exhibition projects such as large museums. The technologies applied, such as harnessing the thermal mass properties of concrete, cogeneration, or natural ventilation are not new in themselves. The truly revolutionary aspect is the holistic planning, resulting not in a compromise but in a harmonisation of the various individual stances.
