Interest turns into action

Climate protection is everbody’s business! Both individually and collectively we have many opportunities.

Even very simple measures and changes in attitude can help... Open your own climate account and discover in an easy way the day-to-day opportunities there are to live more climate consciously. Get to know about joint actions, be inspired to get involved and follow the example of others.

International climate politics depend on the intervention of individuals, regional bodies and initiatives with their ideals and decisions, and set examples for others.

The individual – everyday climate protection

Every day, out of habit we take minor decisions which ignore the climate issue. Find out the easy way about opportunities to live more climate-consciously in your daily life. After you have opened your “climate account”, there are eight stations within the exhibition where you can practice climate-friendly attitudes.

You can perhaps heat your home in a way that economises on energy, and choose a climate-friendly electricity supply with a blend of sustainable energy sources. Have you ever tried a more economical style of driving or kept an eye on the daily consumption of energy and water, e.g. when taking a shower? Does your choice of groceries make any difference to the climate? Decisions with long-term implications, such as new household appliances for example, can be more climate-friendly by following a few simple hints.

Test your knowledge and revue prejudices in a CO2 quiz with questions on climate protection in everyday life.

A community – let’s take action

We encourage you to find out about a number of initiatives which are active in different ways in climate protection. Come closer and browse through the multimedia tableaux of these initiatives and projects. In some cases you can start straight away. Others might whet your appetite to find something similar where you live. There is strength in numbers, which often helps to be more effective in protecting the climate.

Families can decide to support one or other of the projects to protect the climate. Do we need our own car, or could we consider car-sharing?
Find out about public photovoltaic systems. Who can join in, and maybe even install a new one together with others? What are my local authorities, my municipality doing to protect the climate? Maybe there are already interesting initiatives I can get involved in with friends. We show what is being done in Bremerhaven in support of sustainability.

Mankind – Climate conference

How about attending a conference on the climate? You could even become involved in the major conferences on the environment, such as in Rio de Janeiro, Kyoto, or soon to be held in Copenhagen. Non-government organisations take part in these major conferences and can thus influence international climate politics.

With the Kyoto Protocol, for the first time ever we have a world-wide treaty which aims at preventing a harmful change in the climate. How did it come about, and why did it take so long to take effect? You can find out what is stated in the Kyoto Protocol. Listen to people who desperately depend on the implementation of world-wide climate protection programmes in order to adapt to the consequences of climate change with international aid.

Climate Account

At the exhibition’s CO2 terminals you can open your own climate account. Your answers help to calculate how many tons of greenhouse gases are responsible for the man-made change in climate are produced through your own activities.

Is it my domestic surroundings or my travelling habits which contribute most to my “climate burden”? Or is it rather my attitude as a consumer and my eating habits?

The area “Everyday Climate Protection“ presents practical ideas for everyday life to help look after the climate. Find out more about these ideas here.
